They always say cleaning with a toddler in the house is like brushing your teeth while eating oreos… it doesn’t exactly work out! 🙂
BUT if you make cleaning a game, it can become a little bit easier and a LOT more enjoyable!
Now that Spring has arrived, we have the perfect opportunity to start fresh! To get rid of the old and bring in the new. To deep clean those corners we have been avoiding and to organize our closets, that seem to be the last thing we touch when it comes to cleaning.
So, how do we do it?!
Today we have 10 Ways To Make Spring Cleaning FUN even for the KIDS!
1. CREATE A SCHEDULE & GATHER SUPPLIES: Planning ahead is the KEY to your success! Once you create a cleaning schedule {click here for a FREE Weekly-Cleaning-Plan-Printable} that works for YOU, you will be on the road to a sparkly clean house in no time!
Once you have your calendar set, it is time to gather supplies! We LOVE to shop at WalMart for all of our Spring Cleaning essentials! It’s a one-stop-shop for EVERYTHING you need to get your house under control! A few of our FAVORITE go-to products are by Viva®, Scott®, Cottonelle® – in fact, there are always AMAZING deals on their products at your local WalMart!
2. TURN ON THE TUNES: Cleaning doesn’t have to be boring! It is a LOT of work, but that is why the energy needs to be HIGH! Turn on your favorite tunes and don’t be afraid to have a dance party in your living room or kitchen. The kids are bound to join in on the fun and you will quickly see that your broom is actually the perfect sized microphone!
3. SET A TIMER: Everything is more fun when we make it a competition! Set a timer for 3 minutes and see how many things your children can pick up! Then set it for two. And then set it for one. As the timer gets faster and faster, your kids will work faster and faster! This is a great way to not only help them learn how to organize and clean, but helps them get it done quickly!
4. PLAY DRESS UP: That’s right – and YOU get to play dress up too! Grab a towel and make it a cape. Grab a Cinderella dress and put it on your girls – or a Batman costume and put it on your boys. Once your in character, they suddenly have super powers and are able to clean up their toys, make their beds and put away the dishes without complaining!
5. ASSIGN A COLOR: This works especially great for a messy toy room! Yell out a specific color and have them pick up EVERYTHING that is that color! This is a fun way for even the littlest ones, to learn their colors. You can also have them count 10 things to pick up, which will help them learn their numbers and how to count!
6. SWEEP IN THE SQUARE: A household staple and FAVORITE around here! What child doesn’t like sweeping? Every time I pull out my broom my girl wants to join in! Tape a square on your kitchen floor and have them sweep everything into the square! Not only will you have clean floors at the end – but it is hours of entertainment!
7. SQUIRT BOTTLES AND PAPER TOWELS: By filling up squirt bottles with water, your children will feel empowered and will want to squirt that water EVERYWHERE! By giving them a few paper towels and a bottle – you can say hello to a clean home super quickly!
Our favorite paper towels are Viva® Towels because they clean way more than just spills! Viva® has two types of everyday towels that work like cloth to stand up to ANY cleaning job! Although their Vantage towels have a scrubby texture and their Towels are soft and smooth, BOTH are super strong and durable like cloth, so no matter how hard they scrub, they won’t be coming back for more just a few seconds later!
8. I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE: We play this game in the car a lot, but once we started playing it for cleaning time, our lives were changed! If you “spy something with your little eye” they have to guess what it is, by putting the item away.
When cleaning the bathroom, I had just purchased a stock of Cottonelle® CleanRipple Texture toilet paper and needed them to be put away. After “spying” the white toilet paper, it was a fun game to put each of the rolls where they belong! We also LOVE Scott® 1000 bathroom tissue that lasts SO long because it has 1,000 sheets!
9. ALL ABOUT THE INCENTIVES: We are BIG believers in incentives. We all want to be rewarded for our hard work, right?! NOTHING is better than a clean house, so that is of course an incentive in itself, but for the littles, let them know if they help you clean, you will go to the park afterwards or get an allowance. It is fun to work hard, when we know we will get rewarded in the end.
10. SET PRIORITIES: Preparing for Spring Cleaning can be overwhelming. Don’t let the messes and clutters get the best of you! Take it a day at a time, one room at a time. I always suggest to start with the basics. Pick up things that don’t belong in the room and put them where they belong, then move to the counters and dusting, and save the floors for last. When company comes over, they will notice clutter first, then dusting, then the floors. So go in that order!
I am SO excited for Spring! It is such a beautiful time of year! Have FUN getting your cleaning on – you are on the road to a sparkly clean home!
