This year has been so heavy for me and my family…all because of cancer.
My 9-year-old daughter lost one of her very best friends.
My 5-year-old son has a sweet friend who is currently in the middle of treatment.
My grandpa is fighting for his life.
My father-in-law passed away.
And several other family members and friends are battling this horrible disease. I have felt SO much sadness and at times I have yelled, “I HATE CANCER” literally at the top of my lungs out of frustration and pain that this year of illness has brought into my life.
Today I feel so inspired to partner with the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The Prevent Cancer Foundation® is the only U.S.-based nonprofit organization solely dedicated to cancer prevention and early detection. Our mission is saving lives across all populations through cancer prevention and early detection.
49% of women over 40 have not had a breast cancer screening since March 2020.
22% of these women said not having any symptoms was the reason for not having a breast cancer screening since March of 2020.
53% of women 21 and older have either never had cervical cancer/HPV screening or have not had a screening in 6 or more years.
18% of these women said not having any symptoms was the reason for not having a cervical cancer screening since March of 2020.
40% of women 21 and up say they often remind their female friends, family members, and/or loved ones to get their routine breast and cervical cancer screenings.
Early detection really does save lives! It is my hope that each of us reading this today will call the doctor and book an appointment for a routine cancer screening to help prevent cancer or catch it in its early stages.
Cervical cancer screening is one of the few screening that is also preventative, as your doctor can find precancerous cells in the cervix and remove them!
You can also incorporate these routine screenings as part of your overall wellness routine and reward yourself for them! Set a goal that if you go and complete the screening you get to reward yourself! Maybe a little trip to Target? Or a stop at your favorite soda shop on the way home?
I know there is SO much power of communication between women – together it is my hope that we can share and encourage our friends and family to get their screenings too!
When cancer is detected early, it increases your chances of survival. You may also require less extensive treatment or have more treatment options. The five-year survival rate is almost 90% when cancer is found in its earliest stages. For breast and cervical cancers, one of the keys to early detection is scheduling regular recommended cervical cancer screenings beginning at age 21 and scheduling recommended breast cancer screenings beginning at age 40 (or potentially earlier and more often if at increased risk).
You should still be screened for cervical cancer regardless of whether or not you’ve been vaccinated against HPV.
September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness month and October is breast cancer awareness month. I encourage you to CLICK HERE to learn more about cancer screenings and prevention!
