Dinner time. Quite possibly my favorite time of the day!
It is the one time a day we are ALL together, sitting at a table, eating, laughing, talking and making memories without any electronics or distractions – just our little family and some good food! {And you know both of those things are my 2 faves in the world! ha!}
We can go on fun vacations and make all the Target runs in the world – but to be honest, I don’t know if anything is better than just being together at home – spending no money at all – just undivided attention and time with the people I love the most! I feel like those are the moments and memories that are going to last FOREVER!
One of my favorite traditions EVER that we have been doing since our girl was only 3 years old is having, what we call, our “Happy. Sad. Service.” moment every night when we sit down at the table. This tradition gives everyone an opportunity to talk, tell the family about their day and even opens up an awesome conversation of learning a lot of the time!
It is a super simple tradition where you go around the table taking turns saying one thing that made you HAPPY, one thing that made you SAD, and one thing you did to SERVE someone that day.
As the mom, it is my favorite thing in the world to hear what goes on in those little minds of our kids and what they recognize as things that make them happy and sad! We also have LOVED adding on “service” to this conversation, as it makes all of us want to do something kind for someone else so we can talk about it at dinner!
Last night as we gathered around the table, it was my five year olds turn. We had a SUPER busy and fun day at the splash pad and park! We even watched a movie and ate treats, so I figured she would say one of those made her the happiest that day.
But she opened her mouth and said in her sweetest voice, “It made me happy that I get to be with our family and have my own placemat with our family’s picture on it!” It was the sweetest thing that I had to share with you a picture of that moment….
It wasn’t the splash pad or park or playing with friends or a movie or even treats that made her the happiest – it was the simplicity of being together with her family. I could have died it was SOOO sweet!
