The Moment My Life Changed Forever – Mom of an Asthmatic child

What a year it has been!

I honestly don’t even know where to begin! For all of us, this year has been a whirlwind of so many trials & hard days – mixed with so many beautiful blessings & miracles.

It’s been easy to get wrapped up in nerves & stress & anxiousness every single day – but when I actually sit down and take a few minutes to think about the past 9 months, my heart is full with gratitude for so much GOOD that has come from 2020.

Many of you probably remember our scary experience that happened on Thanksgiving morning two years ago. This time of year is always very triggering for me as this special holiday approaches, because we almost lost our little boy due to an intense asthma attack in 2018.

I remember walking into the bathroom where Tys was holding my sweet boy who was throwing up. He had been coughing so much, trying to catch a breath for so long that it was causing his fragile body to give up. I grabbed Hunty boy as soon as I walked in and when I looked at him, I knew something wasn’t right.

His eyes were rolling to the back of his head. He was the color gray from head to toe. His lips were purple. And he was struggling to breathe.

Of course, I panicked. I ran out of the bathroom into the living room where my brother {who is a doctor} was and showed him my weak son. I will never forget his face or his voice when he said, “Get in the car.”

I literally ran into the car without grabbing a thing. No cell phone. No wallet. No diaper bag. Not even shoes. Just me and my baby.

We raced to the hospital Emergency Room where they hooked my little guy up to oxygen & gave him a few shots to open up his air passage. After a few hours in the ER and running several tests, an ambulance came to pick him up, put my not-even-two-year-old on a stretcher and took him off to Children’s Hospital.

We were in an unfamiliar state on vacation with my family for Thanksgiving. We didn’t know where we were. The doctors. The hospitals. The treatments. It was all so foreign and new to us.

I remember laying in the hospital bed with my little buddy, as he breathed through his oxygen mask. I held him tight as tears streamed down my cheek. I wasn’t crying because we were in the hospital. I was crying because he was okay.

My boy was OKAY!

We spent two days in the hospital before we were able to go home. Many tests & doctor appointments followed this incident, which were blessings in disguise – because it led us to great treatments & an official diagnosis of asthma.

Fast forward now two years, I am SO grateful for modern medicine and precautions that we take on a daily basis to make sure my little guys lungs stay healthy and strong.

A hotter than average summer—causing severe ragweed allergy conditions—combined with poor air quality caused by the vast and tragic West Coast wildfires, has asthma sufferers {and parents!!} across the country feeling the impact of a harsh fall season.

For many, these issues are compounded by the ongoing pandemic, with the CDC listing moderate to severe asthma as an underlying condition that possibly increases the risk of complications with COVID-19.

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, more than 26 million Americans have asthma, and the prevalence of this condition is highest among children.

Talk about SO many reasons to feel uneasy & STRESSED OUT, right?!
