DIY Homemade Baby Vapor Rub

A huge thank you to my sweet friend, Daniela from Put A Bird On It, for this amazing idea and post today!! Her ideas and DIY crafts on her blog are so fun and creative, I just know you will love her as much as I do! Here she is…

Hello there! I am Daniela, and I blog over at Put A Bird On It. I am quite stoked to be guest posting here at Today’s the Best Day. I met Danielle at Build Your Blog Conference a couple months ago. My maiden name was Daniela Davis — so Danielle Davis and I became immediate name besties! Danielle was also known for rockin’ her sweet headbands at the conference, and I adore her and her lovely posts. Thanks for having me today!

Another thing Danielle and I share, is being a mom to precious daughters that are about the same age! My one and only baby boo, Ava Noelle, is 15 months old. Being her momma is the greatest joy in my life. I was so blessed to have a baby that was super good, slept through the night, and never was sick. At her 1-year appointment, the nurse asked about any previous illnesses, and I proudly announced NONE! Well, I think I jinxed the poor tot, because a few weeks later, Ava was coughing and sniffling and got a terrible cold. Every time she sucked on her binky, or drank her bottle, she got super congested and sounded like she couldn’t breathe well. Being the worrisome momma I am, and never having had a sick baby before, I took her right to InstaCare. The doctor there was also surprised to hear Ava had never been sick (“No colds? Rashes? Ear infections?!” – nope!). Ava had RSV!! Which, for a newborn, is really bad, but a 1-year old, not so terrible. I was sent home with saline drops for her nose and a blue booger sucker. UGH! There is nothing worse as a mom than to see & hear your poor babylove whimper and toss & turn in bed all night, because she doesn’t feel good! And not have any medicine you can giver her. I needed to do something! I remembered reading about the magic trick of putting vapor rub on feet covered by socks. I have been super nervous to give Ava anything as a baby (I home made all her organic baby food, she nursed til she was over 1, no peanut butter, no chocolate, ha ha I worry!). I didn’t want to trust petroleum filled OTC vapor rub, so I turned to the internet to find a homemade remedy. I found this fabulous recipe for “Better than Vicks” for babies under 2 from Mommypotamus {click HERE for source}. It was surprisingly easy (and amazingly scented) to make it myself! I used it on Ava, and I’d like to think it helped my little munchkin feel soothed during her illness.

I’m in love with essential oils now! No bath is without lavender oil, and lemon oil water is my new favorite drink. My advice: DO YOUR RESEARCH! I researched out SO MUCH about the different types of essential oils, the benefits vs risk, ages to use them, different brands, etc. Do your research and make a decision YOU are comfortable with. Don’t take big risks – stick with the basics to start. Don’t use them all the time! I used this on Ava at night only. But it can be very beneficial, and I’m so happy I went with a natural remedy in this particular situation. Here is the recipe, along with step-by-step photos to help you out. 🙂

*I purchased everything from my local organic store, Whole Foods Market, somewhere I trust*
*I used this because my baby was over 1. I don’t know if I would use it younger than that, and definitely not under 6 months! I’m not experienced enough with essential oils to be comfortable doing that.*

Homemade Baby Vapor Rub
makes about 3/4 cup

Ingredients
4 teaspoons grated beeswax
3 tablespoons cocoa, shea or mango butter
7 tablespoons coconut oil
30 drops high quality essential oils
(10 drops eucalyptus smithii, 10 drops tea tree, 5 drops lavender, 5 drops chamomile*)
The following advice was given in the Mommypotamus article!

“Please note that lavender and chamomile are generally considered safe for babies under two months, eucalyptus (only the smithii variety) can be introduced at two months and tea tree can be introduced after 6 months. Essential oils are very potent so use sparingly!*
Instructions

Using a double boiler {water in pot, boiling, with bowl placed on top – don’t let water touch the bottom of the bowl}, melt the grated beeswax.

Add cocoa butter and melt. Remove from heat. Whisk in coconut oil and essential oils. Pour into container {I used a small jar I purchased from the store – could use a small mason jar – just something with a tight lid}. Store at room temperature for up to 1 year.
You can visit the Mommypotamus page for a list of other essential oils for congestion. I loved the ones I used here!

One huge caution! When purchasing eucalyptus oil, only the SMITHII kind can be used on kids this young. Eucalpytus globulus shouldn’t be used! Double check your oil bottle! I know DoTerra’s eucalyptus oil is ok. Remember – do your research and double check!

Thanks again to Danielle for having me! I hope NONE of your sweet babies get sick; but, if they do, I hope this natural remedy will soothe their little bodies. I’d love for you to come see me at Put A Bird On It. Have the best day!
xo
