On December 14, 2012 I was on bed rest. I was 8 months pregnant and just weeks away of giving birth to my first baby. While on bed rest I tried to keep myself busy. I liked to write, scrapbook, make crafts, take warm baths and read all about birth and becoming a mom for the first time. I remember that morning vividly… it was a day I will never forget.
That morning I woke up and came down the stairs to turn on the TV. I liked to turn the TV on for background noise. I honestly am not much of a television watcher {unless it is The Bachelor}! I normally just turned it on so it wasn’t so quiet in my little house throughout the day. I remember turning on the news and seeing children walking in a line – there had been a mass shooting in an elementary school. I was drawn to the news that day. I couldn’t stop watching! It was the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in American history.
I remember pausing the TV for a minute and saying a prayer for everyone that was affected. The children. The teachers. The families. I think it hit home for me even more, as I sat on the couch holding my big belly. I was bringing another human being into this world! A world that is not perfect. A world that bad things happen in. A world that is sometimes scary and sad. I wondered if I was ready for it.
Here is the challenge:
- Think of an act of service you would like to do this week
- DO IT!
- Post a picture of you and/or your families doing the act of service. You can get your pictures to me the following ways:
Facebook: Tag Today’s The Best Day, #evilwillnotwin
Instagram: Tag @todaysthebestday1, #evilwillnotwin
Email: todaysthebestday01@gmail.com
It is my hope that through this challenge, we can teach our children a little about service and to not allow evil to win. I will compile your pictures and share them with everyone so we can be uplifted together.
Here are some EASY ideas for you and/or your family to do:
- Put change in the red can in front of the grocery store
- Make a craft and give to someone who needs to feel loved
- Have a hot chocolate stand and donate the money to a good cause
- Take cookies to a neighbor
- Write an uplifting note to someone in your family
- Write a thank you card
- Gather and return shopping carts
- Do the dishes, even though it isn’t your day
- Take out the trash, even if you never do
- Turn your phone off for one hour and just talk/play with your kids
- Look up ancestors names and do family history
- Mow the neighbors lawn {for Hawaii readers} or shovel the neighbors snow {for everyone else} even though it is cold outside
- Start a 12 Days of Christmas for another family
Get creative. Think of something that fits your family. It doesn’t have to be hard. I leave you with the following quote, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi.
I look forward to hearing and sharing your stories! I hope the world is a better place because of these little acts of service we do this week!

December 16, 2013 at 8:22 pm (11 years ago)This one one of the saddest days It felt good this week to honor these victims with a simple act of kindness. I chose to do a Christmas countdown for our cute sister missionaries. I think I will do an act if service every year!!!
