I feel so honored to partner up with Walmart today for their Fight Hunger. Spark Change. Campaign. This is something that I completely support and I am excited to spread word to all of you about it!
Years ago my husband lived on the other side of the world, in Cambodia. I remember receiving letters from him every week. In his letters, he would write to me all about the amazing people he would meet. He would meet men, women and children every single day and each of them had something in common: they were ALL hard working. Some worked ALL day and ALL night for their families – trying to provide at least one meal a day for their children.
Many times when we hear of circumstances like these in third world countries, we don’t think something like that can actually happen in the United States. But in reality, it IS actually happening RIGHT here, in our very own country, every day.
Hunger is a serious and major issue in the United States. MILLIONS of Americans don’t even know where their next meal will come from. As a mom, I understand the feeling of needing to provide for my baby girl every day. It makes me sad to think about the many moms and children out there, who may not even be able to have dinner on their tables this evening.
On September 15, 2014, the Walmart Foundation launched Fight Hunger. Spark Change., a nationwide campaign calling on the public to get involved in the fight against hunger. The campaign will provide $3.7 million in grants to participating Feeding America food banks and local partner agencies that provide hunger relief to millions of people in need of food assistance. As part of the initiative, Walmart is teaming up with acclaimed chef, cookbook author and TV host, G. Garvin, and calling on the public to support their local food banks by voting online at http://www.walmart.com/fightinghunger.
Due to historically high rates of food insecurity, our nation’s food banks are facing a growing need for donations. Feeding America recently released its Hunger in America 2014 report showing that in a single year one in seven Americans, including 12 million children, turn to the Feeding America food bank network for food assistance. 12 million children?! As women and mothers, that really touches our hearts.
From September 15 through October 5, customers can visit http://www.walmart.com/fighthunger to cast one vote per day that will help direct grants to participating Feeding America food banks and local partner agencies across the country. The 50 winning food banks will each receive a $60,000 grant. The campaign also provides information on how customers can donate or volunteer to take a direct action in the fight against hunger in their local communities.
Through the initiative, the monetary equivalent of more than 37 million meals will be donated to Feeding America food banks and local agencies throughout the United States! I am so excited for them to help so many parents and children who truly need this!
