Having Faith Through Changes

Often times we come to moments in our lives that change is required. Sometimes we move to a different home, we find a new job, we lose someone we love, we gain someone else to love, our family circumstances change and the list goes on and on. I have so many examples in my life of women who are going through changes right now. Some are for the better and have brought much happiness into their lives. Some have been hard changes that have been trials and have tested their faith.

Today I have been thinking a lot about having faith through changes in our lives. Often times, we know something needs to be changed or is going to change, but we are nervous or scared. It is hard to take that leap of faith to change what we are doing. I know I get comfortable in my situation. I love my daily routine and I love being in my “comfort zone” if you will.

I heard a quote once, “Let your faith be bigger than you fear.”

Let Your Faith Be BIGGER Than Your Fear

When life’s challenges come my way and I am not sure if I can carry on, I remember this quote. How much faith do I have? How much faith do YOU have?

I love what President Eyring once said in a talk. He said that every single day, no matter how tired he was, he would write down a few lines in a notebook about his day. Before he wrote he would ask himself, “Have I seen the hand of God reaching out to touch us or our children or our family today?”  He said, “As I kept at it, something began to happen. As I would cast my mind over the day, I would see evidence of what God had done for one of us that I had not recognized in the busy moments of the day. As that happened, and it happened often, I realized that trying to remember had allowed God to show me what He had done.”

I actually started doing this a few years ago. While Tyson was serving a mission for our church, I made him a binder and challenged him to write in it every day about how he saw the hand of God reaching out to him. Together, even thousands of miles apart, we wrote in our notebooks about how we saw God in our lives. Through daily trials and changes, we were able to see that our Heavenly Father had a plan for us. That he wanted those changes in our lives. That we NEEDED those changes in our lives. And that everything that happened on a daily basis was part of His plan.

Tyson met a beautiful lady named Seksan in Cambodia, who he says “gave his mission meaning.” She was a woman of faith during challenging circumstances. Seksan was a single mom of two grown children. In Cambodia they often do not have front doors to their homes,  as they live in huts that you can just walk in and out of. Tyson and his companion were sitting down to teach a family one day and Seksan just so happen to be walking by. She was interested in hearing what these young men were talking about, so she welcomed herself in on the discussion. Seksan was going through many trials and hard changes in her life, but through the lessons, Tyson was able to teach her about faith in Jesus Christ. Seksan had never prayed in her sixty years on earth, but had faith in what the missionaries were teaching her. She had faith if she prayed, she would receive an answer. Seksan soon after had a dream, from which she decided to take a leap of faith and bring on the biggest change in her life to become baptized. Even through the hardest times in her life, Seksan had faith. She had faith to pray for the first time and had faith to enter into the waters of baptism.

Seksan passed away yesterday. I love her and am sad that I never had the opportunity to meet her. She called Tyson her “Grandson.” Even when changes came into Seksan’s life, she knew that Heavenly Father had a plan. She had faith in Him and turned her heart to Him. I hope I can have her faith throughout my life.

As we go forward this week, I hope that we will remember to allow our faith to be bigger than our fears. I also hope that we always remember that having faith in our Heavenly Father’s plan will bring us happiness and closer to Him. His hand is in our daily lives. Everything happens for a reason. Changes in our lives are necessary for us to grow and to become who He wants us to become. May we all remember to take a few minutes every night to reflect on our day and to recognize what our Heavenly Father has done for us.

When we experienced a devastating lost in our immediate family, it sure tested our faith. I’ll never forget how our parish priest said he didn’t have the answer to the question “why??” for us, but that wasn’t the most important issue. He reminded us, just as you have in this post, that faith which can’t be tested really isn’t faith at all. Are we in this only for the good times, or do we belong to God all the way…no matter what?

That is one of my most favorite talks and I smile every time I see a clip about it during a Baptism.

I really like that quote. It’s good to have faith in something to help carry us through the hard times.
