7 Ways To Make Your House Feel Like HOME Again

You guys.

Remember a few months ago when I was realllllly struggling?! My little family and I were in the middle of a big transition! We were living in two different states at once, traveling back and forth almost weekly, our whole house was in boxes and life was a little nuts!

What we thought was going to be a wonderful, flawless move for our family, ended abruptly after just a few months and we headed back to Las Vegas to settle back into our house we thought we were leaving. It wasn’t our plan and it was a pretty hard pill to swallow – but once again we were taught that we would go where HE {God} wanted us to go, even if it wasn’t what we thought was best at the time.

Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever been in a little rut or funk? Where you KNOW what is best for you and your family, you work hard to make it happen, you step one foot in front of the other and press on – and then something is taken away from you and makes your whole plan crumble?!

It’s hard. It’s SO hard!

As we got back to our house, I looked around at the boxes that I had spent hours and days and even WEEKS packing up – feeling defeated that I had to unpack them in the same place I originally had packed them up.

As I looked around the house, I decided at that moment that I was going to make it my HOME again. A little part of me wanted to live in boxes until we had the opportunity of moving again – but the other part of me told me “SETTLE DOWN! Enjoy the NOW! Make THIS your home.”

Today I am excited to share with you ladies 7 ways I was able to turn my house into my home over the passed few months. I truly believe in order to bloom where we are planted – we need to fully embrace the NOW and find the best in where we are placed.

We all have different circumstances and situations we are in. Whether you are happy and content with where you are – or are feeling lost and wondering “Why me?!” or “Why this?!” or “Why NOW?!” – I hope one of these seven ideas can help you start to bloom RIGHT where you are!

1. GET YOURSELF COMFORTABLE: Number ONE. Notice that it says “YOURSELF.” Get YOURSELF comfortable. As women, we worry about our families, neighbors and friends before we worry about ourselves, but I have quickly learned that in order for ME to be a good wife, a good mom or a good friend…I need to love who I am and where I am! Make your home a place where you feel comfortable and WANT to be. A place where you feel relaxed and are able to think, sleep and take care of YOU.

2. GET ORGANIZED: Start with one drawer. One corner. One little area. And once it is organized, THEN move on to the next. Often times we want to organize our entire house all in one day. *GUILTY!* and we get burned out and end up not being able to finish ANY of it! Start  with a drawer – maybe that junk drawer you have random things piling up in the kitchen. Tell me I am not the only person that has one of those!? 😉

Once you have your area – grab 2 trash bags. One will be for donating items you don’t need. One will be trash. Your goal will be to find a new “home” or place to keep every item from that drawer throughout your house – but if it doesn’t have a home or you don’t need it or it doesn’t work – throw it in one of the bags!

3. TIDY UP EVERY NIGHT: Ain’t nobody got time to wake up to a messy house! I saw this funny meme the other day that said “I just cleaned my house. It would be great if you could just stop living in it now!” Because let’s be real – we all know the MINUTE the house is finally picked up, the tornado toddler comes around and messes it all up again.

Listen – mom life is the BEST life and that is totally going to happen. Let’s just embrace it. Let’s let the toys be dumped out and the crayons be all over the table during the day. But once the littles are in bed – tidy up the house a bit. Put the toys away and crayons back in their box. Going to sleep with a picked up home and then waking up to a picked up home is the BEST way to start the day!

4. HANG PICTURES ON THE WALLS: This has done wonders as we transformed our house into a home! I swear the moment we put the first nail in the wall, I could breathe again. To see the cute faces of my favorite people hanging around my living room was refreshing and are sweet reminders of what is most important.

HOME is where my family is – HOME doesn’t need to be in a certain state or a certain size house. HOME is where those cute little faces look at me and tiny little fingerprints are smeared on the doors and mirrors. HOME can be wherever we make it!

5. PUT A RUG ON THE FLOOR: You will be shocked what incredible detail putting a picture on the wall and throwing a rug on the floor will do to your house! You all know my obsession with Lorena Canals rugs and I HAVE to tell you – they are the cuuuuuuutest and best rugs!! My favorite part about them is that they are machine-washable…Best thing EVERRR!! I have their rugs throughout my entire house and have worked wonders when it comes time to clean them! I also love that they are eco-friendly, made with 100% natural cotton. You can click here to check out all of their different ones – they have one for every room of your house, I promise!

6. REARRANGE WHAT YOU ALREADY HAVE: One fun thing about having to unpack all the boxes was having the opportunity of putting things back in different places!! I grabbed things that use to be in the living room and put them in the playroom – and things that were in my bedroom are now in the dining room! HA! By rearranging the things you already have, you can make a space feel like NEW without spending ANY money!

You can do this with signs on the walls, plants or greenery, rugs {like I mentioned above!} and even centerpieces and chairs! You can even completely rearrange furniture to give your home a completely different feel than it had before which is kind of fun to spice things up!

7. FILL YOUR HOUSE WITH LOVE: How do YOU feel love?! Really. Think about that. How do YOU feel love? Is it through quality time with the people that mean the most to you? Is it physical touch and cuddling? Is it through service or gift giving? However YOU feel love or like to give love, fill your home with that.

By lighting a candle to make your home smell fresh. By opening up your blinds to let natural light in. By baking cookies to fill your home with a yummy taste! Through small and simple things, we can turn our houses into HOMES and create a space where we want and LOVE to be!
