Life can be a bit discouraging! It is hard. It is rough. We ALL have bad days that sometimes turn into bad weeks, bad months and even bad years.
This week I ran into several different people, all going through completely different trials, but all struggling with one thing exactly the same – their self worth. A young friend struggling with the overwhelming amout of homework she had to get done, a young mom trying to find balance between her job and children, a wife going through a horrible divorce and a new mom who is living at the hospital with her new baby, who may not make it another day.
No matter the trial – when hard times come, it is easy for us to forget about who we are. I am sure most of you saw the video “SELFIES” that went viral this week. I LOVED it! The way we look at ourselves is so important! It is extremely easy for us to look at our flaws and weaknesses all the time – I am guilty of that! But today I have a challenge for each of you.
As you all know, I love music. This week, this song has been on my mind so I HAD to share it with all of you. It is from the EFY CD 2003.
When you look in the mirror do you see who he sees?
A face that he loves, someone who knelt at his feet.
Don’t let His light ever pass you by,
Lift up your head, clear your eyes,
When you look in the mirror, do you see who he sees?
At the end of the day do you know who you are?
There’s a big piece of heaven that he left in your heart
Don’t let His light ever pass you by,
Lift up your head, clear your eyes,
When you look in the mirror, do you see who he sees?
He sees in you, faith to move mountains
He sees a heart pure and clean
He sees in you, light of tomorrow
He sees in you a maker of peace
Long ago He took your burdens on
Now with a love so deep, He waits with open arms
Don’t let His light ever pass you by, lift up your head, clear your eyes
When you look in the mirror, SEE WHO HE SEES!
How different would we look if we saw ourselves in His eyes?
Did you know that we are most critical of the people closest to us? That means the majority of the people reading this right now are more judgmental of their spouses, children and even ourselves than we are to strangers. The people we love MOST are the one’s we tend to see negative in. I have come up with a list of ideas how we can stay POSITIVE this week with the three most important people in our lives, as mothers and wives.
1. OUR SPOUSES: I believe we are probably most analytical to our spouses, because we spend the most time with them. We live with them, eat with them, sleep with them…and are with them forever! Does your husband do something that drives you nuts? Next time he does that thing, whether it is doing the dishes wrong or leaving the cap off of the toothpaste – think about the reasons you first fell in love with him. What is your favorite quality in him? Maybe instead of losing our tempers with them, we will be a bit more calm as we remember why we love him – even if he isn’t perfect.
2. OUR CHILDREN: Our sweet kids have so much already going on in their lives. They have peers who are mean at school, homework that they don’t understand and talents they are trying to find. Something important to always remember is kids will be kids. They are going to get messy, break things and even make mistakes – but as their moms we have the opportunity to teach them and bring them up. Not tare them down even more.
3. OURSELVES: Probably the most important person that we can be less fault-finding to is in ourselves. When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Let us always remember who we are. We are princesses! We are daughters of a Heavenly King! We are worth so much more than we can even imagine. We are housekeepers, chefs, doctors, lawyers, teachers, taxi drivers, comforters, spit-up cleaners, bathers, diaper changers, stylists, listeners, laundry doers, park goers, a shoulder to sleep on, be sick on and most of all mothers and wives. Don’t get down on yourself! You are just perfect in His eyes.
Jeffrey R. Holland said, “Think the best of each other, especially of those you say you love. Assume the good and doubt the bad.”
I challenge you this week to think the best of each other, especially those that are closest to you. Assume the good and doubt the bad. I am sure in return you will feel a little happier and see a little bit more of how He sees you.
