Tips And Tricks To Capture The Best Family Photos

It’s that time of year again. Finally it isn’t a thousand degrees outside and it’s not freezing cold yet…. the perfect time of year for family pictures. Family pictures are some of my favorite sessions to shoot. Sometimes the kids don’t behave and things get hectic but it is always a great time and we end up with precious photos that future generations will have to look at and laugh about our hair styles, and even the way we dressed. Anyways, with family picture season here I thought I would give a few insights on what I think helps a family session go smoothly and well.

Tips and Tricks To Capture the Best Family Photos

WHAT TO WEAR?

I get asked a lot about what I think my clients should wear. Everyone has their own style but there are a few things that I personally like and think will help improve your family pictures. When it comes to color, I am not a big fan of everyone wearing the same color, spice it up a little. Pick 2-3 colors that go well together and have everyone wear those colors. Make sure that the shirts you wear dont have writing or any big logos on them. When there are writings or logos it is distracting – solid shirts or a pattern {like stripes} looks great.

WHERE TO TAKE THEM?

Next is location, location, location. When it comes to picking a location you need to think about the look and feel that you want. Are you looking for something in nature with tall grass to create a more free spirited fun picture, or maybe looking for something more edgy downtown with graffiti, broken buildings and alleyways. There are a lot of options and the photographer you choose to create your family portraits will probably have on hand a few good locations that fit the feel and look that you are trying to achieve.

Some of my personal favorite places to shoot are Lake Las Vegas, Calico Basin, and Old Downtown Vegas. Lake Las Vegas is one of my go-to places. They have a cute Italian little town feel, greenery, warm walls, arches, a lake, bridges and pretty much anything else you could want.  Calico Basin has a cool desert scene, tall grass, super pretty trees and the mountains are awesome. Old Downtown Vegas, near Fremont Street, is full of cool locations for that edgy vibe. There are awesome alley ways, cool graffiti casino lights and just a lot of cool options.

HOW TO CHOOSE A PHOTOGRAPHER?

Finally and most importantly is finding a photographer that fits you and your style. Some people think that all photographers are the same – that you just go out, snap some pics and it will look like every other photo…. that is not how it is. Photography is an art and every photographer shoots differently. Some shoot strictly natural light, others strictly with flashes and some {like myself} like to do a mixture of both. Photographers have their own unique look, style and editing techniques. Each photographer poses differently and creates a different end product. It is important that you find the right photographer that can create a family portrait in the style that you love.

Well those are just a few tips I wanted to give you guys. I hope you guys go out and create some awesome family portraits that you will cherish for years to come.
