I spent the long holiday weekend in Utah and my goodness was it cold! I LOVE this time of year and getting to bundle up with scarves, ear warmers and beanies! While there, I saw SO many cute girls wearing the most darling crochet headbands to keep them warm – which made me SO excited to introduce you all to Yarn Twisted – the shop that makes all things crochet to keep you trendy and WARM, this holiday season!
Shana is the owner and creator of Yarn Twisted. She says, “My first memories of crocheting are around age 7 or 8. My mom would give us her leftover yarn scraps and we’d make chains that stretched through rooms, down halls, and up and down stairs. The color I always seemed to end up with was brown. My mom was into crochet in the 70’s though, so brown was probably par for the course.
Fast forward a few years and I had graduated to granny squares by the time I was 11. My mom still had to end each round for me and start a new color, but as the rows got bigger, I began to feel more accomplished and pretty dang proud of myself.”
A few years passed and Shana became a busy teenager and didn’t pick up crocheting until she was in college. By that time, she says that she had forgotten a lot of what she had learned! She continues, “So I started an afghan with my mom’s help on Christmas break my freshman year. And from that point on, my need to crochet was insatiable. I picked up some books and taught myself how to read patterns and abbreviations, and how to work various stitches.”
Shana became a darling mom and used crochet as an outlet for her “me time” – which we ALL understand! She says, “floating around in the back of my head was the desire to make money or be recognized for what I was able to do. I considered craft shows and ebay, but neither seemed like the right outlet for me. So those dreams got put on the back burner.”
Her yarn stash grew… and grew..and grew! And that was when she was introduced to Etsy in 2008. Her story inspires me SO much as her husband lost his job and she suddenly felt the urgency to make her hobby into something that could sustain her family. She spent all of her free time creating for her Etsy shop!
She says, “And then, I got my first idea for an original piece. I had never designed anything before, but I thought it looked like fun. Actually, what I really thought was: “I really think this is an awesome idea. But what if it really sucks? Or what if people hate it? Or what if I’ve got the sizing all wonky?” But I finally pushed ahead and listed it my first original hat.”
Of course it sold – so she listed it again – and it sold AGAIN! And from there on out her creative juices started flowing and her Etsy shop grew to be such a success! She got so busy, she was able to quite her job and focus on her shops FULL TIME!
Shana loves being able to stay home with her kids, do what she loves and earn an income at the same time! She is such an inspiration to me and I LOVE what she does!
I LOVE her crochet hats, beanies, scarves and headbands. They are flawless and made with SO much talent! I love that they are the perfect accessory to complete an outfit AND keep you warm!
